My dear friend Laura McKowen and I have long been thinking of a way to pull women who choose not to drink out of the shadows and into the mainstream. Because...more and more of us are choosing sobriety as a way of life. Because...for a long time we've been led to believe this is a shameful thing, something to be kept quiet, a consequence of something else.
Much of what keeps us from looking at our own relationship with alcohol as it starts to become "a thing" or even LONG BEFORE it becomes "a thing", is our belief that if we stop drinking that we'll be social pariahs. Outcasts. The other. Or that it means that we are set up for a life of struggle or deprivation.
It is so far from this. It is so the opposite of this. It is the END of struggle. It is the END of deprivation. And it is the beginning of everything.
Choosing to not drink is one of the most empowering things a lady can do. And many more of us are choosing it because of this. The life on the other side of the bar or the wine club is infinitely more powerful, more fun, more meaningful, MORE NORMAL, than the life that says you have to drink to live in this world.
